@MSUDenverMBB: Roadrunners open new season with big victory on the road
Box Score ALPINE, TEXAS – The men's basketball team opened up the 2024-2025 season with a bang, defeating Sul Ross State 89-61 in the Region Conference Challenge on the road.
The Roadrunners shot an incredible 54 percent from the field, while connecting on 11-of-27 from beyond the arc to improve to 1-0 on the season.
Sul Ross State was only down by one point with four minutes remaining in the first half, but MSU Denver finished the half on an 11-3 run to take a 42-33 lead into the break. Fort Lewis transfer Brayden Carter scored six points in that run.
Carter led the way for MSU Denver in the first 20 minutes, scoring 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting, hitting 5-of-6 from the free throw line, while pulling down four rebounds. He would go on and finish with 20 points and seven rebounds in his Roadrunners debut.
MSU Denver outscored the Lobos 47-28 in the second half, with 11 different players registering at least two points in the win. Senior Caleb McGill dropped in 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds while new transfer Jamil Safieddine came off the bench to knock down 7-of-10 from the field, recording 18pts. The bench scored 40 of the 89 points.
Turnovers slowed down the Roadrunners in the first half, giving up nine of them that led to 10 Sul Ross State points. But the squad only turned it over five times in the second frame.
Head coach Dan Ficke and his squad will have a quick turnaround facing off against Texas-Tyler in Alpine, Texas tomorrow at 2 p.m. MST.
