@MSUDenverMBB: No. 23 Roadrunners make it rain from deep in victory over Grifins

DENVER – The No.23-ranked men's basketball team connected on a season-high 16 three pointers in their 78-61 win over Westminster at home.

DENVER – The No.23-ranked men's basketball team connected on a season-high 16 three pointers in their 78-61 win over Westminster at home.

The Roadrunners improve to 9-1 overall and remain unbeaten in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference at 4-0. The Griffins fall to 7-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

"I'm really proud of our guys for being ready for a team that was fresh and for a team that hadn't played in a week," Head coach Dan Ficke said. "This was a first time for us, since I've been here, to be 4-0 in the league and head into the Christmas break at least tied for first place and that meant something to us."

MSU Denver splashed in 16-of-32 from beyond the arc and seven different Roadrunners hit at least one from long range. Sophomore Logan Threatt led the way firing in five-of-six from deep to finish with a season-high 19 points.

"It felt good," Threatt said on hitting five-of-five three pointers in the first half. "My teammates found me in the open spots and they're shots I practice everyday and I feel comfortable getting them off."

"We knew we were going to get those shots," Coach Ficke said on the long ball. "They pack the paint, they really help off drives, they were going to help on Brayden and Caleb if we got it to them, so we knew we had to be ready to make those shots."

The squad came up just one trey shy of a program record. The most three pointers in a single game came in November of 2007, when the team drained 17 from three-point land against Dixie State.

The home team raced out to a huge 24-8 lead through the first 10:20 of the game and never looked back. Threatt opened the game with a three pointer and would score eight-of-the-24 points.

"We wanted to hit first," Coach Ficke said on the fast start. "We talked about the three F's before the game: fight, force and focus and for us to sustain that for the full 40 minutes and I thought we did a pretty good job of that. But in that first 20, we really came out with intent on the defensive end."

Senior Ryan Maslow hit a triple with 5:10 left in the first half to give his team its biggest lead at 25 points. They would head into halftime up by 22. Maslow finished with nine points, three rebounds a team-high five assists.

"It feels good to finally see some go down," Maslow said. "I've been struggling a little bit but I'm just trying to do whatever I can to make an impact on the game and tonight they were falling a little bit so I let them go."

While the second half was a much better shooting half for the Griffins, they were only able to cut MSU Denver's lead to within 17 and that was on the final bucket of the game.

The Roadrunners, who lead the RMAC in field goal percentage, hit an impressive 50 percent from the field against Westminster, which included a 60 percent mark in the first half. Even with a few players banged up on the sideline, it seems MSU Denver has the offense rolling in the early stages of this season.

Coach Ficke's squad will head back out on the road next week, first taking on Fort Hays State in Hays, Kansas on Friday December 20. Then they'll head to Kearney, Nebraska to face off against the Lopers from Nebraska-Kearney. Keep up with the men's basketball team at RoadrunnersAthletics.com.
