@MSUDenverMBB: Roadrunners Second Half Comeback Falls Short
PORTALES, N.M. – The MSU Denver men's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season on Wednesday night at Eastern New Mexico, 93-84.
The Roadrunners were led by Caleb McGill with 21 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Brayden Carter added 17 points while KJ Garrett and Quave Propst-Allison each contributed 12 points. Garrett dished out seven assists in the game.
MSU Denver was 2-for-8 from three-point range in the first half and 9-for-12 in the second half to shoot 55.0 percent for the game. The Roadrunners committed 20 turnovers in the game compared to 14 by the Greyhounds and were outrebounded 36-31 in the game.
The Roadrunners started quickly taking an early 6-2 lead after a Carter layup. Eastern New Mexico would go on a 15-1 run over the following 3:19 to bring the score to 17-7. MSU Denver would respond with a 7-0 run capped by a layup by Jamil Safieddine to bring the Roadrunners within three points. The Greyhounds held a ten-point lead with just under five minutes to play in the first half and would outscore the Roadrunners 12-1 over that stretch to take a 49-28 lead into halftime.
MSU Denver battled back to begin the second half and had a chance to tie the game on a Safieddine free throw that missed the mark making the score 66-65 in favor of the Greyhounds with 9:48 remaining. Eastern New Mexico was once again able to build back a double-digit lead over the Roadrunners. MSU Denver would cut the margin to nine after a pair of Carter free throws with 3:09 to play, however, it would not be enough as Eastern New Mexico stretched its lead to as many as 15 points in the final two minutes.
Next up, MSU Denver will host its annual Thanksgiving Classic on November 29 & 30. The Roadrunners face Saint Martin's (Wash.) on Friday, November 29 at 3 p.m. and Northern New Mexico on Saturday, November 30 at 3 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased online at http://RoadrunnersAthletics.com/Tickets.
