@MSUDenverMBB: Roadrunners upset in final moments in loss to CSU Pueblo
PUEBLO, Colo - The ThunderWolves were able to hold off a late Roadrunner rally to pull off the upset by a final of 77-74.
MSU Denver was up by five at halftime, but Victor Lado's layup sparked a CSU Pueblo run in the second half and they found themselves up 67-58 with 5:34 left.
The Roadrunners soon made a final march and went on a 14-4 run over the next four minutes to take back the lead at 72-71. Logan Threatt's fast-break 3-pointer put his team ahead with 1:34 left.
Lado, who came off the bench to score 17 points, slammed home a dunk to put the ThunderWolves back up by one.
Despite missing his first two attempts at the the rim, Quave Propst-Allison cashed in on his third attempt to give MSU Denver the 74-73 lead with 44 ticks on the clock. Propst-Allison finished the game with only four points, but he pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and dished out a team-high seven assists.
Brevin Walter's turnaround jumper put his team right back up by one with 29 seconds left.
On the following possession, Caleb McGill missed a layup in the paint, but got his own rebound and found K.J. Garrett, who fired up a three, but it didn't fall. Walter made both of his free throws to put CSU Pueblo up by three with seven seconds left. McGill put up a 3-point prayer but it didn't go in and the ThunderWolves pulled off the upset against the second-ranked team in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
The Roadrunners' offense shined throughout the game, as they went 31-of-71 from the field, shooting 51 percent. Meanwhile, their bench scored 21 points, 16 of that came from Sufyan Elkannan. The Roadrunners scored 46 points in the paint. The ThunderWolves bench helped their starters with 31 points.
Threatt had an outstanding night, scoring 20 points and grabbing five rebounds, while McGill finished with 16 points and eight boards.
The leading scorer for the ThunderWolves was Walter, who finished with 22.
The Roadrunners have an overall record of 19-8 with a 13-6 mark in the conference. CSU Pueblo improved to 12-15 overall and 7-12 in the RMAC. Luckily for MSU Denver, Regis also fell on the night, dropping a game to Colorado Christian in Lakewood. So both teams have the same 13-6 record in the RMAC. MSU Denver will close out their regular season this Saturday at 3 p.m against those Cougars from Colorado Christian in Lakewood.
