This Week In Roadrunners Athletics: November 6
DENVER – The Roadrunners sports teams are in full cross-over mode for this week. The soccer teams are gearing up for their playoff run, while the volleyball team is coming down the wire of the regular season. The cross country teams will be hosting and competing in the South Central Regional, while our basketball teams are tipping off their 2024-2025 seasons.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
MSU Denver at Colorado Christian, Wednesday, 3 p.m.
MSU Denver vs TBD at home, RMAC Quarterfinals, Sunday, Noon
The women's soccer team beat Western Colorado 1-0 at home last Friday and finished out the home schedule with a 0-0 tie with Fort Lewis on Sunday. The four points on the weekend secured a home playoff game for head coach Kat Mertz's squad, the first since 2012. They'll play at the Assembly Athletic Complex on Sunday, Nov 10 at Noon for the quarterfinal round. But before they do, they have one game remaining on the road, taking on Colorado Christian in Lakewood at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
MEN'S SOCCER
MSU Denver at Colorado School of Mines, Wednesday, 6 p.m.
MSU Denver vs TBD on the road, RMAC First Round, Sunday, TBD
The men's soccer team defeated Colorado Christian 2-0 on the road last Sunday. Dallas Baer scored a goal and added an assist in the team's fourth win in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The victory clinched a playoff spot in the RMAC Tournament for the Roadrunners. They'll battle the Orediggers from the Colorado School of Mines on Wednesday afternoon to determine if they get the fifth seed in the tournament or the sixth seed. Their first round playoff game will take place on Sunday, with time and opponent yet to be determined.
VOLLEYBALL
MSU Denver at UC-Colorado Springs, Friday, 7 p.m.
Regis University at No. 4 MSU Denver, Saturday, 4 p.m.
In hosting pod play last weekend, our volleyball team defeated Regis University 3-0 on Thursday night, before falling to No. 16 Colorado Mesa on Saturday afternoon. The Roadrunners dropped in nine service aces, while putting up eight blocks against the Rangers in the sweep. But against the Mavericks the following night, CMU hit .257 for the match, while holding MSU Denver to just .168 in just the second defeat of the season for the Roadrunners. The loss dropped the team to No. 4 in the AVCA national rankings.
The Roadrunners will look to get back on track against UC-Colorado Springs on Friday on the road, before coming back home to celebrate their five seniors against Regis University on Saturday afternoon. They'll have one more regular season weekend on the road before the start of the RMAC Tournament.
CROSS COUNTRY
South Central Regional Championships, Denver, Washington Park, Saturday, 10 a.m.
The men's and women's cross country teams will take part in the regional championships on their home course this Saturday. The men will compete first in the 10K race at 10 a.m., while the women will start at 11:15 a.m. for their 6K race.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Angelo State vs MSU Denver, Friday, 7 p.m.
No. 2 Texas Woman's vs MSU Denver, Sunday, 2 p.m.
The women's basketball team will start their 2024-2025 season by hosting the Region Conference Challenge at home at the Auraria Event Center. Head coach Tanya Haave returns for her 15th season and returns 10 players from last year's squad, while adding four impact players to the roster. All-RMAC First Team selection Mikylah Espinosa returns for her junior season, after leading the team in scoring last year. Both of MSU Denver opponents come out of the Lone Star Conference, Angelo State is picked to finish sixth in their preseason poll, while Texas Woman's comes in ranked second in all of Division II after reaching the national championship game.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
MSU Denver at Sul Ross State (Texas), Saturday, Nov 9
MSU Denver vs Texas-Tyler, Alpine, Texas, Sunday, Nov 10
The men's basketball team will head on the road to start their 2024-2025 season. They'll face off against Sul Ross State and Texas-Tyler in the Region Conference Challenge in Alpine, Texas. The Roadrunners are led by third-year head coach Dan Ficke, who helped the team reach 19 wins last season and finish in fifth place in RMAC play. The team returns all-conference forward in Caleb McGill, who finished second on the team in scoring and in rebounding.
