DURANGO, COLO. – The MSU Denver men's soccer team fell in the first round of the RMAC Tournament in a penalty shootout to Fort Lewis, losing 2(5)-2(6).

The third-seeded Skyhawks, the #17 team in Division II, advance to a semifinal matchup against the #2-seed Regis Rangers, improving to 11-2-6.

The sixth-seeded Roadrunners' season comes to an end at 7-8-4.

As is tradition between these two teams, the match was anything but boring.

Fort Lewis went up early on the Roadrunners, capitalizing off of a deflection in the 11th minute of the match. The first half would end with a score of 1-0 in favor of the Skyhawks, but things heated up in the second.

Jackson Vander Ven tied things at one goal apiece in the 61st minute, punching the ball into the back of the net off of the assist from a Phillie Villapudua header.

The game stayed locked at 1-1 when midfielder Parker Landry finally broke the tie with a goal, volleying the ball into the back of the net off of yet another header from Villapudua in the 77th minute.

The Skyhawks battled back with another goal in the 84th minute, tying the score at 2-2.

Before either team could score again, the whistle blew, signaling the end of the regulation period – sending the game into overtime. After two scoreless ten-minute overtime periods, a penalty kick shootout would decide the winner.

The first five shooters for each team would score, once again keeping the competition tight. Unfortunately, the Roadrunners' sixth attempt at a penalty kick was saved by Fort Lewis keeper Lucas Martin, sending the Skyhawks into the semifinals and ending the Roadrunners' season.

"I'm so proud of this team and this season. No matter who our opponent was, the guys rose to the challenge," said head coach Nick Kirchhof. " Today we fought and competed with a top-25 team until the very end, it just didn't fall our way."

Luke Bone, Jonas Votaw, Parker Landry, Jackson Vander Ven, Noah Hannula, David Pena, Nicco Schiappa, and Andres Arcila Saenz all completed their senior seasons.

"I want to thank the seniors that spent all their time and energy to build this program, and we will miss them dearly. Their contributions have laid the foundation for this team and they've been incredible ambassadors of MSU Denver and our program," said Kirchhof.
