@MSUDenverWBB: Roadrunners Drop Close One Against Griffins
DENVER – In a closely contested RMAC matchup at the Auraria Events Center, Westminster narrowly defeated the MSU Denver women's basketball team 54-51. Both teams entered the game hoping to find some momentum in their seasons.
The game was tight throughout, with Westminster's ability to dominate the boards proving to be a critical factor as they out-rebounded MSU Denver 49-38. The Griffins also capitalized on their scoring opportunities in the paint, contributing 36 points compared to MSU Denver's 32.
Neither team could seem to find their shooting rhythm as the Griffins only shot 36.7 percent from the field and the Roadrunners only 32.3 percent. Missed shots at the free-throw line also proved to be a thorn in the Roadrunners' side as they only went 9-19 from the charity stripe.
The game stayed tight throughout the first half with the Roadrunners only going into the break with a slim three-point lead. Westminster took control in the third quarter, out-scoring the Roadrunners 18-13, and kept their foot on the gas.
The Griffins took advantage of second-chance points and got the defensive stops they needed in the game's final minutes, maintaining composure at the free-throw line as well.
Mikylah Espinosa delivered a standout performance, leading all scorers with 21 points and grabbing seven rebounds. However, the Roadrunners struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 9.1% (2-22). Despite their defensive effort, with 15 steals as a team, the inability to convert on offensive possessions cost them.
The Roadrunners (1-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, 2-8 overall) go back on the road for their next four games where they will first take on Northwest Nazarene (Idaho) in Salt Lake City for a non-conference matchup.
