Box Score DENVER – The women's basketball team dropped their second game of the weekend, falling 61-51 to the nation's number two team in Texas Woman's.
But head coach Tanya Haave will tell you that the team showed major improvements from their first game of the season against Angelo State on Friday.
"The whole discussion going into today was their mindset," Coach Haave said. "This is the time to change our mindset on how we approach games, how we approach everything. I think we started that at practice yesterday, and I think we were able follow through with that in the game today.
MSU Denver played the Pioneers tough in the first quarter, shooting 53 percent from the field and found themselves down by just four points. But the offense struggled in the next two quarters hitting on just 25 percent allowing Texas Woman's to build a lead they never relinquished.
"The difference in the game was hitting shots." Coach Haave said. "(Texas Woman's) hit 46 percent from two and 40 percent from three, while we were shooting 37 (percent) and 13 (percent from three). We just gotta knock down shots."
While no Roadrunners reached double figures in the scoring department, nine different players scored four points or more. Senior forward Stella Rollo led the way scoring nine points on 4-of-8 shooting. She also led the team with eight rebounds.
"I thought we played much more together today on both ends of the floor," Coach Haave said. "We held them to just 61 points and we only lost by 10. While you never want to lose, (Texas Woman's) has a team that has seven seniors, that was a national runner-up last year and has goals to be national champions this year."
Coach Haave's squad will head on the road for three straight weekends, which includes a trip to Hays, Kansas to battle Nebraska-Kearney and Fort Hays State this weekend. Keep up with the Roadrunners on the road at RoadrunnersAthletics.com.
