@RoadrunnerSB: MSU Denver Settles for Third at RMAC Tournament
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – MSU Denver's run at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference softball tournament came to an end Saturday with a 4-1 loss to 10th-ranked and second-seeded Colorado Christian in an elimination game.
The third-seeded Roadrunners (43-18) finished in third place and a relatively confident of being invited to the NCAA Tournament's South Central Regional. The selection show is Monday at 8 a.m.
MSU Denver couldn't get much going offensively Saturday, scoring only on a sacrifice fly by Hannah DiFabio in the bottom of the seventh inning. That inning included a leadoff walk by Aaliyah Arellano, before Kami Grammerstorf reached on a fielder's choice and then went to third on a pinch-hit single by Jenna Medhus.
Arellano was 2-for-2 for the day. MSU Denver was held to six hits.
Grammerstorf (7-for-14) and Arellano (5-for-10) each batted a team-best .500 for the tournament. Catcher Jaiden Geist, who batted .333 (4-for-12) with two homers and four RBIs, was named to the all-tournament team.
"We were able to get some hits, but unfortunately we couldn't get the key hit or two we needed," MSU Denver coach Annie Van Wetzinga said. "Their pitcher did a really nice job and unfortunately we couldn't make enough adjustments to string things together."
Freshman pitcher Natalie Romero (9-5) drew the start and allowed three runs on three hits in four innings. Cheyenne Prieto allowed one run on three hits while working the final three innings against the high-powered Cougars.
"I was really proud of how Natalie and Cheyenne pitched," Van Wetzinga said. "They kept us in the game and battled against a great offense."
