@MSUDenverSB: Roadrunners Split Doubleheader with the Cougars
DENVER — The MSU Denver Roadrunners split Saturday's doubleheader with the Colorado Christian Cougars (4-1 G1, 7-8 G2) and end the weekend going 2-2 overall.
The Roadrunners move to 27-9 overall and 22-5 in RMAC play. The Cougars go to 28-10 and 24-4 in the RMAC. CCU still holds a one-game lead over the Roadrunners atop the RMAC standings.
It was another impressive day in the circle for sophomore Natalie Romero, who had another masterful performance in game one, going the distance while allowing just one run. She goes to 12-3 overall on the season.
Jaden Geist went 2-for-2 with a run, a walk, and tallied the first RBI of the game in the first contest. Jenna Medhus accounted for the other three Roadrunner runs, with a three-run big fly to center.
Jenna Medhus got the nod in game two, and threw a quality 4.2 innings, allowing three runs. Romero came in relief and was tabbed with the loss after allowing four earned runs in two plus innings of work.
Hannah DiFabio and Berg registered a multi-hit game in the second contest. DiFabio went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI while Berg went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Aaliyah Arellano and Medhus both had clutch two-RBI doubles off the fence for the Roadrunners as well.
GAME ONE
Geist opened the scoring for the Roadrunners, bringing home DiFabio on an RBI-single off the fence. Jenna Medius belted a three-run shot to center the next at-bat, putting her team up 4-0 in the third.
Colorado Christian scored their first run in the sixth on an RBI single to left, but that would be all they got in this one.
Romero shut the door in the seventh, propelling the Roadrunners over the Cougars.
GAME TWO
MSU Denver broke through in the second inning, bringing home five runs for an early advantage.
Arellano placed down a perfect squeeze bunt for the first run. RBI singles from DiFabio and Bueno made it a 3-0 game, and Medhus helped herself out with a two-RBI double off the wall to cap the inning off.
The Cougars stole one run back the following half inning with an RBI single. CCU nabbed three runs in the fifth, making it a one-run game in favor of the Roadrunners.
Back-to-back-to-back doubles off the wall in the fifth from Berg, Boring, and Arellano boosted the MSU Denver lead back to three runs.
CCU rallied for four runs in the seventh inning to capture their first lead of the day, heading into the final half inning with a one-run advantage.
The Roadrunners managed to get a baserunner in the seventh but the Cougars closed the game out with an impressive catch in center to split the series.
