@MSUDenverSB: Romero Deals in Game One, Roadrunners Sweep Doubleheader
DENVER — The MSU Denver Roadrunners swept Saturday's doubleheader with the Black Hills State Yellow Jackets, and extended their winning streak to six games.
The Roadrunners improved to 23-7 overall and 18-3 in RMAC play this year. The Yellow Jackets fell to 18-12 overall and 16-6 in the RMAC.
Natalie Romero tossed a gem in game one once again for the Red and Blue, going six innings, allowing three hits, one walk, and one unearned run. She also struck out four and improved to a 9-2 record on the season.
Brooklyn Enny (2-for-3) and Hannah DiFabio (2-for-3) accounted for five of the nine runs in the first game. Enny had three RBIs and a walk, while DiFabio drove in two runs while also coming around to score twice herself.
Cheyenne Prieto picked up her seventh win of the season after 4.2 innings of work, giving up just two runs while striking out three en route to the Roadrunners' 12-8 win.
Genevieve Bower had the game-winning squeeze bunt in the second contest, which brought around Katie Maney to score. Alexia Boring tacked on three insurance runs shortly after with a three-run homer.
Jaiden Geist went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI on a solo home run. It was her third big fly of the season.
GAME ONE (MSU Denver 9-1 FINAL)
It was a pitcher's duel in this one, with the first run not coming until the bottom half of the fourth inning. Jenna Medhus roped a triple into left-center to lead off the inning, and Enny placed down a beautiful squeeze bunt to bring home Medhus for a 1-0 Roadrunner lead.
DiFabio extended the MSU Denver lead to three with a two-out, two-RBI triple. Maney laced her second hit of the game into left to score DiFabio, making it a 4-0 MSU Denver lead after four innings of play.
The Yellow Jackets got one run back the following half inning off an error. Enny knocked in her second run of the game with a single to right, making it a four-run game, 5-1, once again.
Bower pinch-hit in the sixth inning for the Roadrunners and extended their lead to five with a home run to right field. Trish Leins was the second pinch-hitter to bring home another run, with a base hit down the right-field line.
Geist got an RBI knock of her own to bring home Boring. After a few more baserunners reached base, Enny walked for her third RBI of the contest, ending the game on a mercy rule for a 9-1 Roadrunners win.
GAME TWO (MSU Denver 12-8 FINAL)
Black Hills State struck first in this game, with a two-run home run to right field in the first inning, for an early lead. The Yellow Jackets then put up another four runs in the second for a 6-0 advantage.
The Roadrunners' bats found life in the bottom half of the second, pouring in six runs to tie the game up. Back-to-back two-RBI doubles to left center from Arellano and DiFabio made it a 6-4 contest. Hits from Maney and Prieto knotted this game at six apiece.
After a scoreless two innings from both sides, Geist put the Roadrunners in front by one with a huge home run off the light pole in right field. MSU Denver nabbed one more run off a throwing error by the Yellow Jackets.
Black Hills State was able to tie the game back at eight with two runs in the top half of the sixth. MSU Denver responded in the bottom half with a successful squeeze bunt to take the lead, then a three-run homer from Boring to go up 12-8. Samantha Mader would shut down BHSU in the seventh for the win.
