@MSUDenverVB: Record offensive night lifts No.1 Roadrunners to undefeated RMAC season
DURANGO, COLO – The No.5-ranked volleyball team used a program record .537 hitting percentage to sweep Fort Lewis and capture the Rocky Mountain Athletics Conference's regular season championship outright.
"I am proud of these girls and their focus to finish out the regular season," Head coach Jenny Glenn said. "It takes a lot of toughness and grit, especially over a long period of time to go undefeated in this tough conference."
The Roadrunners finished RMAC play with a 14-0 record, earning the program's fourth perfect conference season. They also had undefeated RMAC seasons in 2016, 2022 and 2023.
"It comes down to unity and depth with this group," Coach Glenn said about what makes this year's squad standout. "It's our job as coaches to keep pushing our players and even with our three units, there is depth and they are all tested. We have a ton of options, so no one needs to have a perfect night for our program to see success."
MSU Denver didn't waste any time in their drive toward perfection against Fort Lewis. They raced out to an 8-0 lead in the first set and finished with a dominating 25-8 first set win.
The Roadrunners hit an amazing .500 in the first set connecting on 13 kills in 22 attempts with just two errors. Junior outside hitter Annika Helf led the Roadrunners with five kills, hitting .625.
The defense also looked amazing in the first frame holding FLC to a negative .156 hitting percentage and putting up seven total blocks. Five block assists came from senior outside hitter Maddy Williams.
In the second set, the well-oiled machine continued it's hot hitting finishing with 13 kills on 22 attempts with zero errors this time for a whopping .591 hitting percentage. They took set two by a final of 25-11.
The Roadrunners' serving game is just another way MSU Denver can beat you. They landed four service aces in the second frame alone with Helf dropping in two. They would finish the match with seven aces to just one service error.
MSU Denver pounded out 15 kills in the third set, while hitting .522. Helf finished the match with 10 kills while senior outside hitter Riley Anderson also reached double figures with 10.
The .537 hitting percentage surpassed the previous mark of .509, when they beat Florida Southern in 1987. Today's team finished with 41 kills in 67 attempts with just five errors.
"You know, we've been high error of late, so I was glad to see our players clean that up this weekend," Coach Glenn said. "Our attackers made great decisions with their arms. We've been attacking from a different space this year and we've done things we haven't done before. We've tweaked some things in our approach and this group has been totally bought in."
MSU Denver will host their quarterfinal match of the RMAC Tournament on Tuesday, Nov 19 at 7 p.m. Their opponent is still yet to be determined but if the squad advances to the semifinal round, the Roadrunners will host both the semifinal and championship rounds at the Auraria Event Center.
"This team is still learning a lot," Coach Glenn said on getting ready for the conference playoffs. "I feel like we found some things this week that we cleaned up and this group is committed to getting better. We're excited to be playing at home this Tuesday."
