La Paloma, a jazz trio of Music students at Metropolitan State University of Denver, debuted at Jazz Odyssey Presents, hosted by KUVO Jazz 89.3.
The two-hour performance was accompanied by poems and history remarks by a leading member of the band, Paloma Ress. After moving to Denver from a reservation in New Mexico, Ress felt like she’d lost a part of her identity. “I wanted the show to be about the magic of what it means to be Indigenous and the resilience of that,” she said.

Combine sugar, water and corn syrup in a heatproof saucepan on the stovetop* over high heat. Bring to a boil, then reduce to medium heat until the mixture reaches 300°F (hard crack stage) on a candy or digital thermometer. Remove from heat and carefully** dip fruit skewers into the syrup, coating evenly. Dunk in ice water for 2-3 minutes or let cool and harden for 5-10 minutes on parchment paper. *Do not use the microwave to make tanghulu. The high temperature can cause microwave-safe containers to melt, and glass containers can lead to burns. **Use caution when dipping the fruit into the syrup, which is very hot and can cause burns with prolonged skin exposure.
